Terunofuji en difficulté
L’ôzeki Kisenosato reste en lice pour s’emparer d’un premier titre insaisissable et voit ses chances de devenir yokozuna maintenues après sa victoire samedi face au sekiwake Tochinoshin.
Un jour après avoir échappé de peu à la défaite contre Myogiryu, Kisenosato s’est rapidement imposé en sortant sans peine le géorgien du dohyô.
Cherchant à mettre fin aux 18 ans d’attente des fans de sumo d’avoir un yokozuna japonais, Kisenosato reste à égalité avec les grands champions Hakuho et Harumafuji ainsi que trois autres lutteurs au score de 6-1.
Hakuho avait l’air d’être en difficulté dans l’avant dernier combat du jour mais le mongol a fait preuve de réflexes ultra-rapides en se déportant pour projeter Myogiryu au sol.
Harumafuji était beaucoup plus convaincant dans son combat contre Ikioi, chassant rapidement le maegashira 4 du dohyô.
Dans les autres matchs clés de l’après-midi, Terunofuji est de plus en plus en difficulté malgré s’être défendu bec et ongles contre Tochiozan. Les efforts du mongol ont été vain, c’est déjà sa troisième défaite consécutive.
L’ôzeki Goeido a conduit le maegashira 1 Mitakeumi vers sa sixième défaite. L’ancien yokozuna amateur est sorti du dohyô en boitant.
Plus tôt dans la journée, l’ôzeki Kotoshogiku s’est retiré de la compétition en raison de blessures au genou et au pied gauche. Par conséquence, il sera au prochain tournoi d’automne pour la sixième fois de sa carrière kadoban.
Kotoshogiku, qui est devenu le premier lutteur japonais à remporter en une décennie le championnat en janvier dernier, a besoin de deux semaines de repos et de traitement pour soigner les ligaments de son genou gauche et l’inflammation autour de son Tendon d’Achille.
C’est le sekiwake Kaisei qui a bénéficié d’une victoire par défaut en l’absence de son adversaire. C’est la deuxième fois dans ce tournoi que le brésilien gagne de cette manière, la première étant lors de la journée d’ouverture avec l’absence de Osunaarashi.
Dans le bas du classement, Endo et Kotoyuki restent bons derniers avec sept défaites. L’erreur n’est plus permise avant le make koshi.

Kisenosato stays on course for maiden title in Nagoya
Ozeki Kisenosato remained in contention for an elusive first title and possible promotion to yokozuna as he wrapped up the first week of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament with a resounding win over struggling sekiwake Tochinoshin on Saturday.
A day after dodging a bullet against Myogiryu, the Tagonoura stable star barely broke sweat at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, getting both arms around Tochinoshin (1-6) to work the Georgian towards the bales and off the dohyo for a sixth win.
Looking to end sumo fans’ 18-year wait for a Japanese-born yokozuna, Kisenosato is tied at 6-1 with grand champions Hakuho and Harumafuji and three other wrestlers.
Hakuho looked to be in trouble in the day’s penultimate bout, but the Mongolian firebrand showed lightning-quick reflexes to turn the tables on third-ranked maegashira Myogiryu (1-6) and send him over the ridge with an underarm throw.
Seeking his third straight championship, Hakuho moved to within seven wins of becoming only the third wrestler in sumo history to reach the milestone of 1,000 career victories.
Harumafuji was far more convincing in his bout against Ikioi (2-5), quickly chasing the fourth-ranked maegashira to keep his piece of first place.
In other key bouts, relegation-haunted Terunofuji (4-3) fought tooth and nail against top-ranked maegashira Tochiozan (5-2) but the Mongolian ozeki’s efforts were in vain as he was muscled out to a third consecutive defeat.
Injury-weary Terunofuji still requires four wins from his last eight bouts to avoid demotion for the Autumn tourney in September.
Ozeki Goeido (5-2) took out top-ranked maegashira Mitakeumi with a pulling overarm throw and sent the former amateur yokozuna limping back to the locker room nursing a sixth defeat.
Earlier in the day, ozeki Kotoshogiku withdrew from the 15-day basho due to knee and foot injuries. As a result, he will — for the sixth time — be facing a battle to save his rank at the Autumn basho.
Kotoshogiku, who became the first Japanese-born wrestler in a decade to win a championship title with a shock victory at the New Year basho in January, will require two weeks of rest and treatment for ligament damage to his left knee and inflammation around his left Achilles tendon.
Brazilian-born sekiwake Kaisei (4-3) won his scheduled bout against Kotoshogiku by default.
