Second kinboshi pour Shohozan
Le yokozuna Harumafuji a subi un revers dès la deuxième journée du hatsu basho lundi face au maegashira 1 Shohozan.
Harumafuji qui cherche à prolonger sa suprématie après avoir remporté le tournoi de Kyushu en novembre a été renversé sur le bord du dohyô. Le mongol s’est projeté avec force contre son adversaire au moment du tachiai mais Shohozan, qui avait terminé à Fukuoka sur un score de 12-3, a été capable de pivoter avant de faire basculer le yokozuna.
« Le yokozuna était rapide au moment de la charge donc j’étais déterminé à l’interrompre en force » a déclaré Shohozan qui bat pour la deuxième fois de sa carrière Harumafuji en 13 rencontres. « Je ne me souviens pas très bien (à propos de la projection utilisée) mais je suis heureux de bien démarrer l’année« .
Le grand yokozuna Hakuho qui a échappé de peu à une défaite hier contre le komusubi Ikioi, a aujourd’hui facilement expédié le maegashira 1 Aminishiki. Le vétéran de 37 ans avait battu la veille l’ôzeki Kisenosato lors de la journée d’ouverture mais n’a pas été en mesure de mettre cette fois le yokozuna en danger. Hakuho s’est imposé en quelques secondes seulement.
Le troisième yokozuna Kakuryu semblait moins convaincant que lundi quand il a été repoussé sur les ballots de paille par Takarafuji. Le maegashira 2 n’est pas passé loin de la victoire avant que Kakuryu ne reprenne le dessus.
Les trois ôzeki japonais ont brillamment combattu. Kotoshogiku a giflé le komusubi Ikioi avant de le saisir à l’aide de son bras gauche pour l’envoyer à terre. Malgré un poignet droit douloureux, Goeido a projeté vers le bas Ichinojo conduisant ainsi le mongol vers une seconde défaite.
Kisenosato, le seul ôzeki avec une défaite, n’a pas éprouvé de difficultés particulières pour pousser le sekiwake Tochiozan. A 33 ans, le nouveau sekiwake Yoshikaze a obtenu sa première victoire face au bulgare Aoiyama.
Terunofuji s’est fermement agrippé à la ceinture de Tochinoshin pour forcer le komusubi à s’incliner.
Vers le bas du classement, aucun des deux nouveaux maegashira n’a remporté de combat. Kagayaki a perdu contre Jokoryu et Shodai a été expulsé du cercle par Takekaze.
Le maegashira 10 Chiyootori est absent à partir d’aujourd’hui à cause d’une blessure survenue la veille à son genou gauche dans son combat face à Mitakeumi. Il offre au russe Amuru une victoire par défaut.

Harumafuji suffers 2nd day loss to Shohozan
Yokozuna Harumafuji suffered a setback on the second day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday, falling to No. 1 maegashira Shohozan.
Harumafuji, looking to add to his Kyushu basho title in November, was overturned at the edge of the ring. The Mongolian barged into his counterpart after the initial crash, but Shohozan, who was 12-3 in his native Fukuoka in November, was able to pivot and floor the yokozuna with a beltless arm throw.
« The yokozuna is quick at tachiai so I was determined to step in strongly, » said Shohozan (1-1), who won for the second time against Harumafuji in 13 bouts. « I don’t remember too well (about the throw) but I’ve made a good start to the year winning this. »
Record title holder Hakuho (2-0), who survived a scare on the opening day against komusubi Ikioi, easily dispatched No. 1 maegashira Aminishiki (1-1). The 37-year-old veteran got the better of ozeki Kisenosato on Sunday, but was asking for trouble when he failed to slap down the yokozuna and easily was backed out the ring in seconds.
The third Mongolian yokozuna, Kakuryu (2-0), looked less convincing as he was pushed to the straw bales by Takarafuji (0-2). But the No. 2 maegashira fluffed his lines, and allowed Kakuryu to recover.
All three Japanese ozeki looked solid on the day. Kotoshogiku (2-0) slapped the face of komusubi Ikioi (0-2) off tachiai to put his left arm around before executing a beltless arm throw, while Goeido (2-0), nursing his sore right wrist, slammed in low against Ichinojo (0-2) and pushed the Mongolian No. 3 maegashira straight off the ring.
Kisenosato (1-1), the only first-day loser on Sunday among yokozuna and ozeki, had little trouble pushing out sekiwake Tochiozan (1-1). New 33-year-old sekiwake Yoshikaze (1-1) also claimed his first victory with a force out against Bulgarian No. 2 maegashira Aoiyama (0-2).
Ozeki Terunofuji (2-0) got his left hand firmly on the front of Tochinoshin’s belt and forced the komusubi out to his second defeat.
