Kakuryu échoue face à Yoshikaze
Le grand champion mongol Hakuho a marqué son retour sur le dohyô en obtenant une victoire confortable face au komusubi Tochinoshin dimanche lors de la première journée du Kyûshû basho.
En revanche, pour le vainqueur du précédent tournoi d’automne, le champion mongol Kakuryu a échoué face au komusubi Yoshikaze pour la seconde fois consécutive.
De retour d’une blessure au genou gauche qui l’a forcé à se retirer du basho d’automne en septembre dès le troisième jour, Hakuho a repris possession du dohyô en envoyant au sol le géorgien Tochinoshin à l’aide d’un puissant uwatenage dans l’avant dernier combat du jour. Cette victoire permet au yokozuna de remporter intégralement les 20 rencontres disputées avec Tochinoshin.
Hakuho, le lutteur le plus de titré de l’histoire du sumo avec 35 titres dans sa carrière, participe en tant que yokozuna à son 50ème tournoi, il se place quatrième derrière Taihô (58), Chiyonofuji (59) et Kitanoumi (63).
Kakuryu s’est avéré être la seule victime majeure de la journée après les victoires du yokozuna mongol Harumafuji et de tous les ôzeki.
Yoshikaze est de retour au quatrième plus haut rang comme komusubi pour la première fois en neuf tournois après une progression très impressionnante en septembre quand il a battu les yokozuna Hakuho et Kakuryu, ainsi que deux ôzeki.
Yoshikaze a prouvé qu’il était en grande forme et que ses incroyables victoires en septembre n’étaient pas dues au hasard en renouvelant sa victoire contre Kakuryu. Lors de l’interview d’après match il a déclaré :
J’étais un peu nerveux aujourd’hui ce qui montre que j’avais une forte détermination à gagner.
Yoshikaze avait remporté en automne deux prix spéciaux décernés par la NSK en récompense de ses performances exceptionnelles et de sa technicité.
« Je n’avais pas de stratégie particulière mais le yokozuna est tombé en arrière et j’ai été en mesure de prendre le dessus. J’espère que je pourrai obtenir des victoires à deux chiffres dans ce tournoi« .
Kakuryu avait évincé Terunofuji en prolongation lors du championnat dernier à Tokyo et s’était emparé de son premier titre en tant que yokozuna, bien que son parcours avait été facilité par l’absence de Hakuho et de Harumafuji.
Harumafuji, qui a raté toute la compétition d’automne et la plupart du basho de Nagoya en juillet en raison d’une blessure au coude droit, a utilisé un jeu de jambes astucieux avant de charger sur le sekiwake Myogiryu obtenant une victoire pour la journée d’ouverture.
Chez les ôzeki, Goeido a remporté la première des huit victoires dont il a besoin pour maintenir son rang contre Okinoumi après avoir affiché un score de 7-8 en septembre synonyme de kadoban.
Kotoshogiku très encouragé dans sa ville natale de Fukuoka s’est imposé par yorikiri face au bulgare Aoiyama avant de rejoindre les vestiaires sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Kisenosato ne s’est pas fait surprendre par l’assaut de Osunaarashi avant de triompher rapidement du maegahsira 1.
Terunofuji ne s’est pas ménagé pour aller chercher la victoire face à son compatriote mongol Ichinojo. Le coude bandé, Terunofuji toujours blessé n’est pas passé loin de la défaite.
Le sekiwake Tochiozan débute mal la compétition en se faisant chasser à coups de gifles par le maegashira 3 Toyonoshima.
Dans les rangs inférieurs, le maegashira 11 Mitakeumi, seul nouveau venu dans la division makuuchi pour ce tournoi, démarre bien avec une victoire contre Takekaze.
« J’étais nerveux. Peut-être que j’étais un peu inquiet avant le combat mais j’ai été en mesure de voir les mouvements de mon adversaire« , a déclaré Mitakeumi. « Le tournoi ne fait que commencer mais je vais donner le meilleur de moi-même« .
Mitakeumi a terminé sur un score de 12-3 alors qu’il luttait pour la seconde fois chez les jûryô. Il a atteint l’élite en seulement quatre tournois depuis ses débuts, il s’agit de la deuxième progression la plus rapide depuis le début de l’ère Showa (1926-1989).

Hakuho marks return with win, Kakuryu shocked on 1st day
Mongolian grand champion Hakuho marked his return to the raised ring in style with a comfortable win over komusubi Tochinoshin on Sunday, the first day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
But fellow Mongolian grand champion and Autumn tournament winner Kakuryu failed to follow suit and suffered a stunning upset defeat, once again at the hands of komusubi returnee Yoshikaze.
Returning from a left knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the autumn basho in September on the third day, Hakuho put on a sumo clinic in the day’s penultimate bout, biding his time before sending Georgian-born Tochinoshin down with a textbook uwatenage overarm throw. Hakuho has now won all 20 of his meetings with Tochinoshin.
The most successful wrestler in the history of sumo with 35 career titles, Hakuho is appearing in his 50th meet as yokozuna, taking sole possession of fourth on the all-time list.
Kakuryu turned out to be the only major casualty of the day after Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji and all four ozeki made winning starts at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
Yoshikaze is back at the fourth-highest rank of komusubi for the first time in nine tournaments after a highly impressive showing in September, when he beat both Hakuho and Kakuryu, as well as two ozeki.
And he showed that was no fluke as he spotted an opening and tore into Kakuryu before sending him flying off the dohyo.
« I was bit nervous today, which shows I had a strong determination to win, » said Yoshikaze, who at the Autumn meet was awarded both the Outstanding Performance Prize and the Technique Prize, two of the three prizes the JSA gives to makuuchi wrestlers on the final day of a grand tournament.
« I didn’t have a game plan as such, but the yokozuna dropped back and I was able to get into him. Hopefully I can get double-digit wins at this tournament, » he said.
Kakuryu ousted Terunofuji in a dramatic championship playoff in September, although his path to the title was eased by the absence of Hakuho and Harumafuji.
Harumafuji, who missed the entire autumn meet and most of the Nagoya basho in July due to a right elbow injury, showed nifty footwork before charging out sekiwake Myogiryu for an opening-day win.
In other bouts in the upper ranks, Goeido got the first of eight wins he needs to keep his ozeki rank after going 7-8 record in September, forcing out second-ranked maegashira Okinoumi.
Fukuoka-born Kotoshogiku’s yorikiri win over Bulgarian-born second-ranked maegashira Aoiyama was met with thunderous applause from home fans and Kisenosato shrugged off an early attack from Osunaarashi and bundled the Egyptian No. 1 maegashira out.
Terunofuji was made to sweat but completed a clean sweep for ozeki by outlasting No. 1 maegashira and fellow Mongolian giant Ichinojo.
Sekiwake Tochiozan got off to a losing start when he was slapped down by third-ranked maegashira Toyonoshima.
In the lower ranks, No. 11 maegashira Mitakeumi, the only newcomer to the makuuchi division at this tournament, kicked off with a win by thrusting out 12th-ranked Takekaze.
« I was nervous. Maybe I was a bit concerned getting forward but was able to see my opponent’s movement, » said Mitakeumi. « The tournament has only just started but I’ll give it my best shot. »
Mitakeumi scored a 12-3 record as a fifth-ranked wrestler in the second-tier juryo division last time out. He has reached the top flight just four tournaments since making his debut, the second fastest since the start of the (1926-1989) Showa Era.
