Tokushoryu remporte son premier tournoi
Le maegashira 17 Tokushoryu a défié toutes les probabilités lors du tournoi, et a battu l’ozeki Takakeisho lors du dernier combat et ainsi remporter son premier championnat en makuuchi.
Le natif de la préfecture de Nara, âgé de 33 ans, a livré la performance de sa carrière pour couronner une série de 13 victoires consécutives, et terminer avec un score final de 14-1.
« Au fond, je me suis demandé : Est-ce que je peux gagner le championnat ? « , a plaisanté Tokushoryu dans son interview après le combat.
Le maegashira 17 est devenu le premier lutteur le plus bas à remporter un titre en première division depuis Takatoriki en mars 2000, et a décrocher le premier championnat en makuuchi pour son écurie, la Kise beya.
« J’étais le lutteur le plus bas, je n’avais rien à craindre. Je devais juste donner tout ce que j’avais. »
Ayant besoin d’une victoire pour éviter les éliminatoires avec son rival le plus proche, le maegashira 4 Shodai, Tokushoryu a dû faire livrer une bataille sans merci contre Takakeisho (11-4). Il a repoussé l’ozeki en arrière après avoir obtenu une prise droite à la ceinture, mais a failli être balancé lorsque Takakeisho a semblé reprendre le dessus.
« J’ai attrapé la ceinture par la droite, et j’ai chargé en avant, puis je me suis fait balancer par lui et j’ai pensé que c’était fini, mais j’ai persévéré« , a déclaré Tokushoryu.
Après avoir retrouvé son équilibre, Tokushoryu a repris du poil de la bête pour ensuite conduire Takakeisho de l’autre côté du dohyo, le forçant à sortir pendant que les deux lutteurs s’effondraient.
Tokushoryu, qui a passé 12 des 13 derniers grands tournois en division juryo, est le premier lutteur originaire de Nara à remporter la Coupe de l’Empereur en près de 100 ans.
Il a également remporté un prix pour sa performance exceptionnelle, et un autre pour son esprit combatif. Ce sont ses deux premiers prix en 12 ans de carrière.
Shodai (13-2) a gardé ses espoirs de titre en battant Mitakeumi (7-8). Shodai a instantanément repoussé l’ancien sekiwake sur le bord du dohyo, et a donné une dernière poussée alors que Mitakeumi vacillait sur le bord.
Tokushoryu et Shodai ont tous les deux remporté des prix spéciaux pour leur esprit combatif.
« Cela aurait été formidable si j’avais pu (aller en séries éliminatoires)« , a déclaré Shodai. « J’étais prêt et j’attendais, mais ça ne s’est pas produit. »
Endo a facilement vaincu Shohozan (7-8), et a terminé la rencontre sur un score de 9-6. Le populaire maegashira, qui a battu les deux yokozuna, a remporté son premier prix pour sa performance exceptionnelle.
Hokutofuji (11-4) semblait sur le point de remporter sa 12e victoire, mais a été repoussé au dernier moment par Yutakayama (11-4).
Hokutofuji a remporté son deuxième prix qui récompense la technique grâce à son impressionnant style de sumo tout en poussé et qui l’a aidé à battre à la fois les ozeki, mais aussi le yokozuna Kakuryu au début de la compétition.
Pour ses débuts comme sekiwake, Asanoyama a obtenu une 10e victoire après avoir battu Ryuden (10-5).
L’ozeki Goeido (5-10), qui sera rétrogradé, a été renversé par Onosho (9-6), tandis que le sekiwake Takayasu (6-9) s’est imposé face à Aoiyama (4-11). .
Le nouveau komusubi Daieisho a battu son homologue Abi (5-10), et finit sur un score de 7-8.
Dans les rangs inférieurs, le débutant en makuuchi Kiribayama a terminé à 11-4, et a été récompensé d’un prix spécial.
Enho (8-7) était en lice pour un prix technique mais n’a pas réussi à obtenir une neuvième victoire, condition sine qua non pour son obtention, lorsqu’il a été expulsé par Kagayaki (10-5).
Okinoumi, Ikioi et Kaisei ont obtenu une victoire salvatrive qui leur permet de terminer le tournoi sur un score de 8-7

Tokushoryu defies odds to claim maiden title at New Year meet
Rank-and-filer Tokushoryu overcame all odds at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament and beat ozeki Takakeisho in the final bout on Sunday to win his first top-division championship.
The 33-year-old Nara native delivered the performance of his career at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan to cap off a streak of 13 straight wins and finish with a 14-1 record over 15 days of improbable sumo.
« Deep down I’m feeling like, ‘Is it okay for me to win the championship?' » Tokushoryu joked in his post-bout interview.
The No. 17 maegashira became the first bottom-ranked wrestler to win a top-division title since Takatoriki in March 2000 and delivered the first makuuchi championship for his Kise stable.
« I was the lowest-ranking fighter, I had nothing to fear. I just had to give it everything I had. »
Needing a win to avoid a playoff with his closest pursuer, No. 4 Shodai, Tokushoryu faced an uphill battle against Takakeisho (11-4). He muscled the ozeki back after securing a right-handed belt hold, but was nearly swung out when Takakeisho rallied at the straw.
« I got the right-handed belt grip and I charged forward, then I got swung around by him and I thought that it was over, but I just kept going, » Tokushoryu said.
After regaining his balance, Tokushoryu stepped on the gas and drove Takakeisho to the other side of the ring, forcing him to step out as both wrestlers tumbled down.
Tokushoryu, who spent 12 of the last 13 grand tournaments in the second-tier juryo division, is the first Nara-born wrestler to lift the Emperor’s Cup in nearly 100 years.
He also won an Outstanding Performance Prize for his efforts, one of two special prizes earned here, and the first two of his 12-year career.
Earlier, No. 4 Shodai (13-2) kept his title hopes alive by steamrolling No. 2 Mitakeumi (7-8). Shodai instantly drove the former sekiwake back to the edge, and delivered a final shove as Mitakeumi teetered on the straw.
Both Tokushoryu and Shodai earned Fighting Spirit Prizes for their domination as co-leaders during the second half of the tournament.
« It would have been great if I could have (had a playoff), » Shodai said. « I was ready and waiting, but it just didn’t happen. »
The other stars of the year’s first meet had mixed fates.
No. 1 Endo easily dispatched No. 7 Shohozan (7-8) and ended the meet at 9-6. The popular top-ranked maegashira, who beat both yokozuna before they pulled out with injuries, won his first Outstanding Performance Prize.
No. 2 Hokutofuji (11-4) looked on the verge of claiming his 12th win, but was pushed out at the last moment by No. 9 Yutakayama (11-4).
Hokutofuji won his second Technique Prize for his impressive pusher-thruster style of sumo that helped him beat both ozeki and grand champion Kakuryu in the early days of the meet.
Asanoyama clinched a 10th win in his sekiwake debut after driving No. 8 Ryuden (10-5) to the edge and flattening him on the dohyo.
Among the struggling elite, soon-to-be demoted ozeki Goeido (5-10) was thrown down by No. 7 Onosho (9-6), while sekiwake Takayasu (6-9) outmaneuvered No. 8 Aoiyama (4-11).
New komusubi Daieisho beat his colleague Abi (5-10) to salvage a 7-8 record in his first appearance in the « sanyaku » ranks, the three below yokozuna.
In the lower ranks, makuuchi debutant Kiribayama finished with an 11-4 record to earn a Fighting Spirit Prize.
No. 5 Enho (8-7) had been in the running for a Technique Prize but fell short in getting a conditional ninth win when he was pushed out by No. 11 Kagayaki (10-5).
No. 4 Okinoumi, No. 15 Ikioi and No. 16 Kaisei all collected winning 8-7 records on the final day.
